Schembri, Westwater each score fourth of the season

CINCINNATI - Xavier women's soccer opened its BIG EAST schedule with a win, topping Creighton 2-1 after Sydney Schembri scored in the closing seconds of the match. Xavier (5-4-2; 1-0 BIG EAST) took a 1-0 lead into the break, but Creighton (2-7-1; 0-1 BIG EAST) found the equalizer with less than 15 minutes remaining. Xavier's offense forced three corner kicks in the closing minutes of the game, connecting on the goal in the final 10 seconds to secure the win.

HOW THEY SCORED

40' | XAVIER | Just before the break, Carrie Lewis took a shot on-frame from about six yards out, forcing CU's keeper to make the diving save. With the keeper on the ground Emma Westwater came in from the right side to send the ball into the back of the net, putting Xavier up 1-0 at the break.

77' | CREIGHTON | In the final 15 minute of regulation, CU's Taryn Jakubowski served the ball from 30 yards out to Keelie Fothergill on the left side of the box. Fothergill dribbled the ball to the left corner of the net, shooting to the far post to tie the game.

90' | XAVIER | Carrie Lewis served the ball into play on a corner kick with 15 seconds on the clock. Sydney Schembri's header from just outside the six-yard box bounced off the crossbar and in to give Xavier the 2-1 lead with less than five seconds to play.

NOTABLE

Emma Westwater and Sydney Schembri each scored their fourth goal of the season, matching each other for team-high.
Westwater leads the team with nine points. Schembri's eight points stands in second on the team.
Carrie Lewis picked up the assist on Schembri's goal, her third of the season.
Xavier took 15 shots to 10 for Creighton. Westwater's three led XU.
Xavier had seven looks on-frame, each taken by a different Musketeers.
Xavier forced six corner kicks to just one for Creighton, including three in the final five minutes of the game.
Toni Bizzarro picked up her fifth win of the season, moving to 5-4-1 overall. Bizzarro finished with two saves and one goal against.
Maddie Tierney and Carly Alfano played full time on the back line for Xavier.
Xavier moved to 5-4-2 on the season and 1-0 in BIG EAST play.
The win improved the Musketeers to 5-2-2 at home.
