Xavier takes the weekend series over the Redbirds, 2-1
CINCINNATI – Mitch Gallagher hit a walk-off RBI single down the right field line to lead the Xavier baseball team to a 3-2 win over Illinois State on Saturday afternoon.
Xavier won the weekend series, 2-1, and improved to 13-11 on the year. The Redbirds dropped to 6-15 on the year.
• Illinois State posted two more hits (10-8) than Xavier and committed one more error (1-0). The Redbirds also left three more runners on base (10-7).
• Mitch Gallagher (2-for-4, RBI), Rylan Bannon (2-for-3) and Matt Fallon (2-for-4, R) all had multi-hit days for the Musketeers.
• Joe Gellenbeck was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run.
• Rylan Bannon had a stolen base as he increased his season total to eight (8-for-8).
• Greg Jacknewitz started the game for Xavier and went 5.1 innings. He allowed eight hits and two runs, while throwing one strikeout.
• Brad Kirschner (1-1) earned his first win of the season, throwing three strikeouts in 3.2 scoreless innings of relief. He only allowed two hits.
FIFTH INNING: Joe Gellenbeck hit a two-run shot over the right field fence, scoring Xavier's first two runs of the game.
NINTH INNING: Mitch Gallagher hit a one-out, RBI single down the right field line to secure the win for the Musketeers.
Xavier returns to action on Wednesday, March 29 at Miami (OH). First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
