Marquia Turner led Xavier with 11 points, her 14th career double-figure game

CINCINNATI- The Villanova Wildcats handed Xavier women's basketball a 72-47 loss on Sunday afternoon at Cintas Center. The Musketeers moved to 10-10 (2-7 BIG EAST), while the Wildcats improved to 11-9 (6-3 BIG EAST).

The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, keeping a double-digit lead throughout the majority of the game.

NOTABLES

• Martha Thompson posted a career-high three blocks. She added five rebounds in 20 minutes of action off the bench.

• Marquia Turner scored 11 points, putting her at 14 career games scoring in double figures. The junior guard chipped in three assists and three rebounds.

• Anniina Äijänen was only one point and rebound short of her first career double-double, recording nine rebounds and nine points. She went 4-for-8 from the field.

• Marquia Turner led the Musketeers with 11 points, while Maddison Blackwell finished with 10 points. She has averaged 10.7 points per game in seven career games vs the Wildcats with a .596 field-goal percentage.

FIRST QUARTER

• The Wildcats started the afternoon off with a 14-6 run, capped by back-to-back three pointers.

• Villanova ended the quarter with a 6-0 run, resulting in a 20-6 Villanova lead.

• Xavier posted a .167 field-goal percentage (3-for-18), while the Wildcats hit 47.1 percent (8-for-17) of their shot attempts.

SECOND QUARTER

• The Musketeers were able to get some shooting going with a nine-point effort from Marquia Turner during the quarter.

• Villanova outscored Xavier, 19-15, in the quarter to take a 39-21 halftime lead.

• At half, Xavier's leading scorer was Marquia Turner with nine points, while Anniina Aijanen followed with six points.

THIRD QUARTER

• The Musketeers started the second half on a 5-3 run on 2-for-3 shooting, but were still outscored 14-10 by the Wildcats, resulting in a 53-31 Villanova lead at the end of the quarter.

• Raeshaun Gaffney had five points and three rebounds in the quarter. Xavier hit 50 percent of its shot attempts (7-for-14).

FOURTH QUARTER

• Xavier scored 16 points in the quarter, its most points in a quarter on the night. Villanova would hold on for the 72-47 win, improving to 7-1 in the all-time series.

• Maddison Blackwell had six points and four rebounds in the frame.
