06.21.16 | Track and Field, Women's Golf, Athletic Department
This year marks the 26th year of the Woman of the Year Award program
INDIANAPOLIS – Shane Crutchfield from women's golf and Onya Edwards from track and field have been selected as nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Both seniors recently wrapped up their Xavier athletic careers.
The awards program, established in 1991, recognizes student-athletes based the following criteria: academics, athletics, service and leadership. This year, a total of 511 women were selected as nominees across all three NCAA divisions.
A total of nine women were selected as nominees from the BIG EAST Conference with Xavier and DePaul each having two honorees.
Crutchfield, a four-time all-conference selection, finished her senior campaign as the BIG EAST Individual Champion at the conference championships. The St. Petersburg, Fla., native finished her time at Xavier as the career stroke average leader.
Edwards competed at the BIG EAST Championships in May after being sidelined most of the season with a knee injury. The Lake Wylie, S.C., native finished her career as the school record holder in both the long jump and triple jump (indoor and outdoor).
The NCAA Woman of the Year program honors the academic achievements, athletics excellence, community service and leadership of graduating female college athletes from all three divisions. To be eligible, nominees must have competed and earned a varsity letter in an NCAA-sponsored sport and must have completed eligibility in her primary sport.
Eligible female student-athletes are nominated by their member school. Each conference office then reviews the nominations from its member schools and submits its conference nominee to the NCAA. The NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee selects the Top 30 – 10 from each division and then three finalists from each division. The Committee on Women's Athletics selects the winner from the Top 9.
All 30 Woman of the Year honorees will be recognized, and the 2015 Woman of the Year announced, at an awards dinner at the Westin Indianapolis on Sunday, October 18, 2015.
