Musketeers get seven innings of one-run ball from Zac Lowther, solo shot from Andre Jernigan in loss
MACON, Ga. – Sophomore Zac Lowther posted a strong start, but was out-dueled in a pitcher's duel on Friday at Mercer as Xavier baseball fell in 10-innings to begin a three-game weekend set at Claude Smith Stadium.
It took under two and a half hours to complete the extra-inning affair, as both teams combined for just nine hits. Trey Truitt blasted a two-run walkoff homer to give Mercer the win in the bottom of the 10th.
Mercer starter Ryan Askew was also brilliant, limiting XU to just two hits and carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The Bears' righty lasted eight innings overall, striking out nine.
• Xavier collected just two hits total in the game and was held to two-or-fewer runs for a fifth straight game.
• Joe Gellenbeck (1-for-4) and Andre Jernigan (1-for-4) each recorded hits for the Musketeers. Jernigan's homer in the sixth represented XU's lone run.
• Matt Fallon went 0-for-2 from the leadoff spot, but worked two walks and recorded a stolen base.
• Sophomore southpaw Zac Lowther twirled seven innings of one-run ball, striking out seven and scattering four hits in a dominant performance.
• The seven-inning effort tied a career-high for Lowther, who also tossed seven innings in a 16-2 win over Butler on May 15, 2015.
• The only run charged to Lowther came via a solo home run by Kyle Lewis in the seventh.
• Garrett Schilling entered in relief, tossing 2.2 innings and striking out two before surrendering a walkoff homer to Mercer's Trey Truitt.
SIXTH INNING: Andre Jernigan broke up Askew's no-hit bid with a solo home run to right field, leading off the sixth. It was Jernigan's first homer of the season and the 10th of his career.
• The Musketeers will continue their weekend series at Mercer, playing game two at 2 p.m. at Claude Smith Stadium. Greg Jacknewitz is slated to take the ball for XU.
