Alum led Xavier program for seven years
CINCINNATI --- Xavier University head women's soccer coach Woody Sherwood announced today that he's stepping down after seven seasons at the helm of alma mater.
"I've had a nice run and it was great to coach at my alma mater," said Sherwood. "In the end, the young women of this program made it easy to come to work each day. I'm proud of our program and believe a solid foundation is in place for the future."
Xavier compiled a 47-72-10 record for seven seasons under Sherwood, including 7-11-1 this past season, which concluded with a loss to Butler on Friday night. XU recorded a record of 12-48-4 in conference play during his tenure, including 6-19-2 in three seasons in the Atlantic 10 and 6-29-2 in four seasons in the BIG EAST. XU posted a 1-8 BIG EAST record this past season.
Under Sherwood's leadership, the Xavier women's soccer program has excelled in the classroom as well. Most recently, the program capped off the 2015-16 academic year by posting the highest team GPA among Xavier programs for Spring 2016 with 3.62 cumulative GPA, continuing the trend of steadily improving on the team GPA that has remained at a 3.5 or above for three-straight academic years.
Sherwood, a 1991 Xavier University graduate with a bachelor's degree in psychology, was a four-year letterwinner for the men's soccer team while playing both at midfield and on defense. He earned his master's degree from Xavier in sport administration in 1995.
"We have a lot of respect for Woody and how he ran our women's soccer program," said Christopher. "Everyone thanks Woody for his efforts and we appreciate Woody's approach to insuring the young women in our program had a positive experience. Looking forward, we expect that our Women's Soccer team can make the BIG EAST Tournament and thus compete for a conference championship."
A national search will begin immediately.
