The meet was held at historic Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y.
BRONX, N.Y. - Xavier cross country competed at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 28 at Van Cortlandt Park. The Xavier women placed sixth, while the men's squad took eighth, respectively.
The Providence women won the championship meet for the second consecutive season, while Villanova's Angel Piccirillo captured the individual title. The No. 4 Friars were one of two nationally ranked teams at the meet on the women's side.
No. 23 Georgetown captured the men's title for the second straight season, while the individual champion was Villanova's Patrick Tiernan for the fourth consecutive season.
"I was disappointed with our place as a team, but we did have some individuals really step it up today. Delainey, Allison and Rachael all dropped a lot of spots from the BIG EAST Championship last year and kept it close between us and Marquette. I really thought we would have enough to grab that 5th spot, but each of Marquette's individuals were a few places ahead of our girls. Our girls did a great job of setting up the first half of the race, but Marquette was a little stronger over the last 1K."
"Our team goal was 6th and we fell a little short of that over the last 2,000 meters of the race. According to the live updates the guys were in 5th at the 2K, 6th at the 4K and it was really close between us, Creighton and DePaul between the 5K and the 6K. The cemetery hill loop set us back a bit and then we were not able to close it down over the last 1K. I was really happy with Grant and the way that he raced today to lead the team. He's battled back from so many injuries and setbacks to have the best race of his college cross country career. Garrett also had a strong performance and Mason had his best race of the season."
