Sophomore named to College Soccer News Preseason All-America Team, Top Drawer Soccer National Top 100 List
CINCINNATI – Cory Brown has picked up a few more preseason honors, earning a spot on the College Soccer News Preseason All-America Third Team and jumping into the Top Drawer Soccer National Top 100 List as the 22nd ranked player in the nation.
Brown was also selected to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team last week. A sophomore defender from Nelson, New Zealand, Brown has been accumulating quite a few preseason accolades. Two weeks ago, he was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and last week Brown was selected for a spot on Top Drawer Soccer's Preseason Best XI Second Team.
As a group, Xavier's 11 shutouts and 0.84 GAA were both program records in 2014 and Brown's steady presence in the backline was a big reason. The freshman stepped into the starting lineup immediately and did not miss a match. Brown's 23 starts tied a program record and his 2,119 minutes played led XU.
On top of his defensive role, Brown added three goals and three assists from the back row and was the team's fifth-leading scorer.
Xavier is one of just 15 teams nationally with five consecutive 10-plus win seasons and one of just 19 to appear in four of the past five NCAA Tournaments. The Musketeers are also in the top-12 nationally in terms of total wins over the past five years (61) and NCAA wins over the past three years (3).
XU finished the 2014 season with a 15-6-2 record (6-1-2 BIG EAST) and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time in program history.
The Musketeers begin the regular season on Friday, August 28 against Eastern Illinois at Xavier Soccer Complex. First touch is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
