ST. LOUIS – Sophomore cross country and track athlete Meghan Vogel was recognized at the annual Musial Awards on Saturday, Dec. 5 at the Peabody Opera House in St. Louis.
The Musial Awards is an event that honors the legacy of Stan Musial by celebrating the greatest moments of sportsmanship in North America. Vogel was originally honored at the event in 2012, but was invited back to be part of the 10th anniversary celebration of producing the event in St. Louis.
"I'm humbled to be honored by the St. Louis Sports Commission again," said Vogel. "Through them I've been able to meet so many outstanding people who have illustrated selfless actions of sportsmanship and I'm honored to be part of the experience."
Vogel was a sportsmanship award recipient in 2012 during her senior year at Salem HS in West Liberty, Ohio. She helped a fellow competitor cross the finish in the 3,200-meter run at the OHSAA Track Championships after the runner collapsed on the track. Her act of sportsmanship went viral and spread quickly throughout the country.
ABOUT THE MUSIALS
Formerly the National Sportsmanship Awards, the event is now named for the late St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer and beloved St. Louis sports icon.
Defined by class, excellence, humility and generosity, Stan the Man embodied the virtues of sportsmanship. So it's fitting that the most meaningful and inspiring night in sports now bears his name.
Hosted annually at the historic 3,100-seat Peabody Opera House in downtown St. Louis, the Musial Awards recognize remarkable individuals and amazing stories of character, kindness, selflessness and integrity in sports. The event is a powerful platform to promote the values of respect and civility on the playing field and throughout society.
