Xavier women have won nine of the last 12 meetings with Cincinnati
CINCINNATI - Senior Briana Glover scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in the second half as the Musketeers closed the game on 11-0 run to defeat Cincinnati, 65-56, on Sunday evening in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout.
The Xavier men's team defeated the Bearcats, 65-55, on Saturday night as the Musketeers completed the series sweep for the second consecutive season - the first time in school history that Xavier has swept the series in back-to-back seasons.
Xavier's senior class of Jenna Crittendon, Glover and Aliyah Zantt finish their careers with a 3-1 mark against the crosstown rival. The Musketeers have now won nine of the last 12 meetings between the two schools.
Xavier improved to 7-2 on the year, its best start through nine games since going 9-0 to start the 2010-11 season. The Bearcats dropped to 3-5 overall, their fifth straight loss.
Glover finished the game 7-for-11 from the floor and 2-for-2 from behind the arc. Crittendon finished with 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting to go along with a game-high four assists. Raeshaun Gaffney and Zantt both added nine points in the win.
Tied at 56 with 2:41 left in the game, Xavier went 3-for-3 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the foul line to close the game on a 11-0 run. All told, the game had seven ties and 14 lead changes - the most in Xavier game this season.
The Musketeers hit 51.9 percent of their shot attempts in the second half, its highest percentage in a half this season, to outscore the Bearcats, 40-26, in the second stanza. Xavier also held a 21-12 advantage on the glass in the second half.
Zantt hit back-to-back baskets to open the game as the Musketeers took an early 4-0. Xavier hit four of its first five shots from the floor to lead 9-6 at the 5:20 mark, but the Bearcats took advantage of seven early Musketeer turnovers to close the period on a 10-3 run and make the score 16-12.
Cincinnati hit its first basket in the second quarter to take its largest lead of the half, 18-12, before Xavier regained the lead with a 7-0 run capped by a Gaffney three-point play. The two teams exchanged leads two more times in the stanza before the Bearcats scored the final six points of the half to take a 30-25 lead into the locker room.
The Musketeers outrebounded the Bearcats, 40-31, on the night - led by Crittendon, Leah Schaefer and Zantt who all posted seven rebounds. Alyesha Lovett led Cincinnati with six rebounds.
Xavier had seven blocks in the game, led by Glover and Crittendon who both had three. Crittendon also had three of the team's eight steals.
The Musketeers scored 18 points off of 13 Bearcat miscues and held a 19-10 advantage in points off the bench. Xavier also scored 26 points in the paint, while limiting Cincinnati to only 12 points.
Jasmine Whitfield led three Bearcats in double figures with 14 points on 5-for-19 shooting. Ana Owens added 13 points and Bianca Quisenberry had 10.
Xavier returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 19 against Howard. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. from Cintas Center.
