Musketeers earn four-seed in upcoming BIG EAST Tournament, will host DePaul on Sunday at 4 p.m.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – No. 25 men's soccer dropped a 3-0 decision at Butler, closing the regular season on a soggy Thursday at the Butler Bowl.
Xavier drops to 11-5-1 and 5-3-1 in BIG EAST play, snapping a five-match unbeaten streak and clinching fourth-place in the regular season standings. After today's results, a home date with fifth-seeded DePaul awaits in the BIG EAST quarterfinals on Sunday at 4 p.m.
Butler improved to 10-4-3 (6-3 BIG EAST) and clinched the league's third-seed. The Bulldogs will host Providence on Sunday at 1 p.m. in quarterfinal action.
Earlier today, Georgetown locked up the regular season title with a 2-1 win over Creighton. Both will receive first round byes. Xavier would face the top-seeded Hoyas in a potential 2014 semifinal rematch if the Musketeers are able to get past DePaul on Sunday.
For Butler, it was a special senior night as the Bulldogs became just the second team to put up multiple goals on the Musketeers in league play. The three goals allowed by Xavier tied a season-high and led to an uncharacteristic road loss, dropping XU to 6-2-1 away from Cincinnati.
The Musketeers dominated the run early, but David Goldsmith put Butler up 1-0 in the 12th minute off a deflection. The sequence began off a missed clearance and resulted in an open look for Goldsmith, who buried the left-footed shot from outside the box.
Still, at halftime the Musketeers held a convincing edge in both shots (7-3) and corners (6-1) – functioning as the aggressor for most of the opening stanza.
Following the half, Xavier began to push for an equalizer and conceded a second goal when Butler got its first good look in the 77th minute. Michael Peay began the play, striking a perfect cross to Vincent Mitchell who finished a header from point-blank range to make it a 2-0 match.
The Bulldogs got an insurance goal in the 79th, as Mitchell struck again off a breakaway chance. The senior secured his brace by chipping in his own rebound past a diving Dallas Jaye.
