Sophomore had the game-winner at No. 1 Creighton last Wednesday
CINCINNATI – Sophomore Matt Vasquenza has been named to the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week after sending Xavier men's soccer to a 2-1 win over No. 1 Creighton last Wednesday in Omaha, Neb.
The East Hampton, Conn. native delivered in the 89th minute, grabbing control of a deflection in the box and finding the back of the net for his second straight game-winner. Vasquenza also beat Marquette with a 95th minute golden goal in Xavier's preceding match.
It was his fifth goal of the season, which ranks second on the team.
Vasquenza has now been named to either TDS or CSN national teams of the week on three separate occasions. His first award came on Nov. 25, 2014 after scoring the go-ahead goal against No. 5 Indiana to help Xavier advance to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
Xavier returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 5 at Butler for a 7 p.m. ET match. If the Musketeers win or tie, they will be the third-seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament. XU has already clinched a quarterfinal home match on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 4:00 p.m. against a TBD opponent.
