Michigan defeats Xavier, 92-54, on Thursday night
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Xavier women's basketball dropped its first game of the 2015-16 at Michigan on Thursday night as the Wolverines topped the Musketeers, 92-54, at the Crisler Center. The Musketeers moved to 1-1 on the year.
The Wolverines (3-0) hit seven of their first nine three pointers and hit 56.8 percent of their shot attempts in the first half to build a 49-20 halftime advantage. Kate Flaherty led all scorers at the break with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Jillian Dunston had eight rebounds at halftime for Michigan as the Wolverines held a 23-8 advantage on the glass.
Kindell Fincher had five points in the first stanza to pace the Musketeers, while Raeshaun Gaffney and Marquia Turner both had four. Maddison Blackwell and Gaffney both pulled down two rebounds in the first half to lead Xavier on the glass.
Michigan continued to hit over 50 percent of its shot attempts in the second half as the Wolverines pulled away for the 92-54 victory. The Wolverines finished the night hitting 56.5 percent of their shot attempts (39-for-69), including a .533 percentage from behind the arc (8-for-15).
Xavier went 18-for-51 from the floor and 14-for-24 from the charity stripe. Michigan was 6-for-9 from the foul line.
Gaffney led the Musketeers with 15 points on 4-for-9 shooting. Anniina Äijänen finished with eight points on 3-for-3 shooting, including a pair of three pointers.
Michigan won the battle on the glass, 42-25, led by Dunston's game-high 14 rebounds. Gaffney paced Xavier on the glass with five rebounds.
Flaherty led five Wolverines in double figures with a game-high 19 points. Madison Ristovski added 13 points and a game-high three 3-pointers, while Siera Thompson dished out a game-high eight assists.
Xavier scored 14 points off of 17 Michigan turnovers and scored 24 points in the paint. The Musketeers added 12 second-chance points.
The Musketeers return to action on Sunday, Nov. 22 against Maryland-Eastern Shore at 2 p.m. The contest is the first of 11 consecutive home games for Xavier.
