Bluiett’s 18 points led five Musketeers in double figures
CINCINNATI - James Farr matched his career high in both points and rebounds to help Xavier men's basketball top Missouri, 78-66, at Cintas Center on Tuesday evening. Farr was one of five Musketeers that finished in double figures in the scoring column.
Farr finished with 15 points, matching his previous career-high of set against Bowling Green in Dec. 7, 2013. Farr's game-high 14 boards, including seven offensive rebounds, equals his career high set at Murray State on Nov. 24, 2014.
Trevon Bluiett led all scorers with 18 points after a 13-point second half. J.P. Macura added 16 points, hitting 80 percent from floor and going 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Edmond Sumner finished with 12 and Myles Davis added 10 as the Musketeers moved to 2-0 on the season.
Xavier built a four point lead early, going ahead 9-5 after four early points from Davis. Missouri took the 10-9 lead before the Musketeers put together a 10-2 run, sparked by five quick points from Macura off the bench to build Xavier's largest lead of the first half at seven, 19-12, with 11 minutes before the break.
The Tigers responded by holding the Musketeers scoreless from the floor for over seven minutes to erase the Musketeers' lead, building a three point advantage before a jumper from Larry Austin Jr. ended the 13-3 run for the Tigers with 4:11 left in the half.
A three from Remy Abell started an 11-4 run for the Musketeers in the final minutes of the half, giving Xavier a three point lead, 37-34, before a Missouri basket just before the buzzer set the halftime score at 37-36 in favor of the Musketeers.
Macura finished with nine first-half points to lead all scorers and Davis added eight for the Musketeers. Farr grabbed a team-high six rebounds, including four off the offensive glass, to help Xavier outrebound Missouri 20-14 in the first 20 minutes.
Out of the half, Missouri briefly retook the lead before an 11-2 Xavier run, including seven points from Bluiett and four from Farr, put the Musketeers ahead 48-40 less than five minutes into the second half.
After a three from UM's Wes Clark, a pair of Davis free throws, Bluiett hit his third three of the night to give Xavier its first 10-point lead of the night, 53-43, with 14 minutes to play.
Missouri chipped away at the lead, getting as close as six, before an Macura three pointer sparked an 11-2 run, giving the Musketeers the 68-53 advantage, the largest lead of the game, with 6:21 remaining. The Musketeers maintained the double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.
Xavier finished with a 40-28 advantage on the boards, collecting 13 offensive rebounds leading to 11 second-chance points. The Musketeers turned 18 Tiger turnovers, including nine steals, into 21 points. Austin's three steals matched UM's Clark for game high.
Xavier is back in action on Friday, Nov. 20 at 9:00 p.m. when the Musketeers travel to Michigan for the inaugural Gavitt Tipoff Games.
