Volleyball Concludes Season With Pair of Wins
PHILADELPHIA – The Xavier volleyball team closed out the 2003 season with wins over George Mason, 3-1 and Manhattan, 3-0 in non-conference action on Saturday at Temple’s McGonigle Hall.
The wins give the Musketeers a 16-15 record and their sixth straight non-losing season under 2003 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year Floyd Deaton.
In the opening match of the day, Xavier used a team-effort to defeat Colonial Athletic Association Champion George Mason, 3-1 (30-24, 30-23, 19-30, 30-21).
Freshmen Astyn Bjorklund and Erica Kaczorowski each had 10 kills for the Musketeers who out hit the Patriots .200 to .155 on the strength of 35 assists from Marisa Main.
George Mason was led by 27 kills from Aline Pereira and 15 by Niki Bernardes, but XU put together a strong defensive effort behind freshman Danielle Skrajewski's 11 digs.
In the season finale for Xavier, the Musketeers swept the Metro Atlantic Athletic Association Champions Manhattan, 3-0 (30-26, 31-29, 30-28) on the strength of sophomore Kate Duchek's 18 kills.
Duchek, who hit .333 in the match, also had two of XU's eight service aces and assisted on two of the Musketeers' eight blocks.
Although Duchek was the only Musketeer to reach double-figures in kills, XU out hit the Jaspers .271 to .226. Main had 34 assists to go along with 10 digs to tie junior Molly Martin for the team lead.
