CINCINNATI - Three-seed Xavier will meet two-seed Creighton in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Volleyball Championships in Omaha, Neb., on Friday. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (ET) and will be contested following the first semifinal match between No. 1 Marquette and No. 4 Butler.
Xavier (21-10, 12-4 BIG EAST) and Creighton (21-7, 12-4 BIG EAST) tied for second place during the regular season, but the Bluejays won both matches head-to-head to earn the two seed.
CU took the first match in four sets, but needed five sets to win the second meeting. All-BIG EAST First Team members Abbey Bessler and Aubree Smith led XU in both matches. Bessler combined for 41 kills and 38 digs in the two matches, while Smith dished out 92 assists.
The Musketeers will also need big contributions from Alex Smith, Xavier's third first team all-conference member, second team all-conference honoree Alex Blair and preseason All-BIG EAST selection Sarah Brown.
The winner between Xavier and Creighton will square off with the winner between Marquette and Butler in the finals. The championship match will be held at 6 p.m. (ET) on Saturday.
Creighton is hosting the conference championship at the D.J. Sokol Arena, home of the Bluejays' volleyball and women's basketball teams.
