Volleyball's Bachus named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year

DAYTON --- The coaches of the Atlantic 10 named Xavier's Sara Bachus Atlantic 10 Player of the Year tonight. It is the first time a Xavier player has earned the honor since joining the conference in 1995.

Bachus led the conference this season in hitting percentage with a .372. It marks the first time since 1996 that any A-10 player has recorded a hitting percentage above the .350 mark. Bachus finished third in the A-10 averaging 4.43 kills per game. Bachus recorded her 1,000th kill earlier this year, becoming just the fourth player in XU history to reach that milestone as a junior, and the tenth overall. The Cincinnati native was also named to the All-Conference Team.

Junior Jill Hampton and freshman Kimberly Cockerel were also honored in tonight's ceremonies. Hampton, a junior from Ft. Mitchell, Ky. was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team. Hampton led the team and was second in the A-10 with 3.59 digs per game. Having amassed 374 kills this season, she is just 39 shy of 1,000.

In the first year of honoring an All-Rookie Team, Xavier's Kimberly Cockerel was honored. The freshman led the team in blocks per game with .95. She was also second on the team in hitting percentage with .272.
