Volleyball Prepares for Atlantic 10 Tournament

The Xavier volleyball team will begin competition in the Atlantic 10 Championship at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Dayton.

The Musketeers enter the tournament as the third seed after going 13-3 in Atlantic 10 competition this year. Xavier was 22-7 overall this season.

TOURNAMENT NOTES:

THE XAVIER-TEMPLE SERIES: Temple leads the series 8-5 since Xavier joined the Atlantic 10 in 1995. The Owls have won 27 games to Xavier's 22. The two teams split this season's meetings.

XAVIER-TEMPLE IN THE A-10 TOURNEY: The Owls lead the Atlantic 10 Tournament series 1-0 after defeating Xavier in the first round of the 1998 A-10 Tourney 3-2 at Duquesne University. Temple went on to win the tournament and advance to the NCAA Tournament.

XAVIER VERSUS THE OTHERS: Dayton and Xavier have a long history. Dayton leads the series 24-19, but the Musketeers have taken the last six meetings, and have only lost three games doing it. Since entering the A-10 in 1995, Xavier leads the series 7-5. Xavier swept the Flyers in 2000.

Xavier has not been as successful with George Washington. After winning both meetings this year, the Colonials now hold a 10-3 record all-time against Xavier.

20 MORE WINS: With 22 wins this season, Xavier posted its second straight 20-win season. This feat has not been accomplished at Xavier since the 1993 & 1994 seasons.

IMPRESSIVE TURNAROUND: Xavier started its 2000 campaign 0-3 after losing three straight matches in the Carolina Classic in Columbia, S.C. The Musketeers have compiled a 22-4 record since returning from South Carolina.

OH SO CLOSE: Junior Jill Hampton has accumulated 374 kills this season, bringing her career total to 961, just 39 shy of 1,000. Hampton's 3.74 kills per game are sixth best in the A-10. She is also second in the conference with 3.59 digs per game. The junior leads the team in double-doubles with 14.

RECORD BREAKER: This season has been one to remember for Musketeer right side hitter Sara Bachus. Bachus leads the Atlantic 10 with a .372 hitting percentage. No player has hit above .350 in the Atlantic 10 since 1996. Her 4.43 kills per game rank third in the conference. Bachus joined the XU 1,000 Kill Club on Oct. 28 against La Salle, becoming just the fourth Xavier player to reach that milestone as a junior and the tenth overall. She is on pace to shatter the Xavier single-season hitting percentage record, and Her.317 career hitting percentage is the highest in Xavier history by 33 percentage points. Bachus is currently 9th all-time in career kills at Xavier with 1,057. Her 430 kills this season are the eighth best single-season total at XU.

REMARKABLE COMEBACK: Setter Tami Ores tore her ACL in a match at Dayton last year on Oct. 15 and missed the rest of the year. This season the senior is second in the Atlantic 10 with 12.76 assists per game. Ores has amassed 1,238 assists this season, the eighth highest single-season total in XU history.
