CINCINNATI - The BIG EAST Conference named Alex Smith its Player of the Week following a dominant and errorless weekend in league play. Smith's efforts were instrumental in helping Xavier secure a berth in the conference tournament with two weeks still to play.
A native of St. Louis, Mo., Smith notched 22 kills without registering an error to lead Xavier past Georgetown and Villanova this weekend. She put together a .550 hitting percentage, raising her league-leading average to .408 on the season.
In Friday's match against Georgetown, the middle blocker recorded 13 kills with three blocks. Smith followed with another nine kills and four blocks in a sweep of Villanova.
The errorless weekend helped raise Smith's career hitting percentage to .353, which tops Xavier's record books by 15 points. She also played in her 135th match as a Musketeer, tying Missy Hathorn (1991-94) for the most all-time as a Musketeer.
This marks the first time that a Xavier volleyball player has been named Player of the Week in the BIG EAST.
Freshman Abbey Bessler also earned recognition on the weekly Honor Roll. She registered 33 kills and 19 digs on the weekend, which included her team-leading 18th double-double against Georgetown. Bessler connected on a career-high 25 kills and 12 digs in the match.
