BRONX, N.Y. The Fordham Rams used 19 kills from Roxanne Hill to shock visiting Xavier in five games (30-24, 28-30, 30-25, 30-32, 15-13) on Friday night at Rose Hill Gymnasium.
Xavier, who remains in a fourth place tie with Rhode Island and Duquesne in the Atlantic 10 playoff race, is now 14-12 overall and 5-6 in the Atlantic 10. Fordham improves to 11-17 overall and 3-8 in the A-10. The win is the first ever by Fordham over Xavier in 15 all-time meetings between the schools.
The Rams took advantage of the match as setter Kristyn Daly dished out 55 assists to push four Fordham players into double figures in kills led by Hills 19. Beth Crockett had 15, Monai Johnson had 11 and Lindsey Lofstedt added 10 kills for the Rams.
Xavier countered with four players of its own with at least ten kills as senior Katey Wygant led the way with 17 kills. Freshman Meggie Hoffman added 15 kills to go along with 11 digs to record her 16th double-double of the season.
Junior Kimberly Cockerel had 12 kills of her own and freshman Katie Duchek came off the bench to record 10 kills.
Freshman Libero Jordan Brightwell led the way defensively for Xavier with 16 digs but the Musketeers could not overcome 16 service errors and a blocking deficit of 15.0 to 6.0 held by Fordham.
Xavier travels to Rhode Island on Saturday for a must win match against URI at 6 p.m.
