CINCINNATI - Xavier volleyball takes its 16-9 (7-3 BIG EAST) record on the road for a pair of BIG EAST Conference matches at Georgetown and Villanova this weekend. The Musketeers will take on the Hoyas at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon in Washington, D.C., before heading to Philadelphia for a 3 p.m. showdown on Sunday against the Wildcats.
This weekend's matches provide an opportunity for Xavier to distance itself in the league standings. Both Georgetown and Villanova enter the weekend in a three-way tie with St. John's for fifth in the conference. All three teams have an identical 4-6 conference record and sit two-and-a-half games behind Xavier in the league standings.
XU is tied with Creighton for second in the league at 7-3, while Marquette sits atop the standings at 9-1 and Butler ranks fourth at 6-4.
Junior setter Aubree Smith orchestrates a Xavier attack that ranks second in the conference in both assists (13.37 a/s) and kills (14.29 k/s). Smith ranks third in assists, handing out 11.27 a/s during conference only matches.
Freshman outside hitter Abbey Bessler has been the main beneficiary of Smith's sets, connecting on 4.35 k/s during conference play.
The Musketeers also boast one of the conference's top defenses, holding opponents to a hitting percentage of just .175. Alex Blair leads the league at 1.50 b/s during conference only matches, while Sarah Brown (4.62) and Lauren Metzger (4.00) rank sixth and seventh, respectively, in digs per set.
