Musketeer Volleyball Pulls Out 3-2 Win Over GW
CINCINNATI - The Xavier volleyball team outlasted visiting George Washington, 3-2 (23-30, 30-16, 30-27, 19-30, 15-12) in front of 578 fans at Cintas Center on Friday evening.
The win lifts XU to 10-14 overall and 4-6 in the A-10. GW fell to 19-7 overall and 7-4 in Atlantic 10 play.
Playing in front of its home crowd for the first time in over a month, the Musketeers were led by three players with double-digit kills.
Sophomore Kate Duchek had a team-high 21 kills to go along with three blocks. She was followed by the freshman duo of Astyn Bjorklund and Danielle Skrajewski. Bjorlkund had 15 kills and added four blocks while Skrajewski had her second straight double-double with 14 kills and a team-best 20 digs.
XU out hit GW .156 to .115 behind a match-high 53 assists from Marisa Main. Lauren Dunning had 52 assists of her won for George Washington in helping three Colonials reach double-figures in kills.
Ruth Lazzari led GW with a match-high 23 kills followed by Lindsey Vernand with 20 and Sarah Hokom with 11.
Defense kept the Musketeers in the match as they had 96 digs a team. Erica Kaczorowski had 19 digs to join Jordan Brightwell and Molly Martin with 18 each and Skrajewski as four Musketeers had double-digits in digs.
After the teams split the first four games, Xavier jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in game five on a kill by Bjorklund.
GW would rally to knot the score at 4-4 and after the teams traded the next few points, XU took the lead for good at 9-8 on a kill by Duchek.
A Musketeer run gave XU a 13-10 lead after a kill by Duchek. The Colonials mounted a comeback but would fall short in th end as Skrajewski capped the match with kill in the middle of the floor off a fedd from Main.
Xavier hosts Duquesne on Saturday at 4 p.m. Kimberly Cockerel will be honored during Senior day cermonies before the match at 3:45 p.m.
