Volleyball Returns Home for Matches Against GW and Rhode Island

CINCINNATI - The Xavier volleyball team faces George Washington and Rhode Island at Cintas Center Friday and Sunday. The Musketeers are looking to notch some victories deep into the conference season.

Xavier (14-9, 6-3 A-10) faced the University of Cincinnati in a late non-conference battle Tuesday, Oct. 25. The Musketeers fell in four sets, despite having sophomore Sarah Brown record her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs. Senior Kathryn Traut had her best outing of the season in blocking with three total blocks (1 solo and four assisted).

Brown is the top attacker for XU, posting 3.16 kills/set average. Freshman Aubree Smith has assisted 841 times this season for a 10.01 assists/set average. Junior Stephanie Vorherr is the top passer on the squad with a 4.23 digs/set average. Red-shirt sophomore Alex Smith and senior Michelle Matia head up the blocking department with 0.94 and 0.96 blocks/set respectively. Junior Kaela Jo Freppon is a threat from the service line, having knocked in 27 aces this season (0.39 aces/set).

The Colonials (17-6, 6-3 A-10) are riding a five-match winning streak that goes back to the five-set battle against the Musketeers on Oct.9. In its most recent weekend of A-10 action, GW swept both Temple and La Salle.

Lauren Whyte leads the offense, with 3.84 kills/set. Setter Katie Crosby has accumulated 867 assists this season for a 10.57 assists/set average. Candace Silva-Martin is the top passer with 4.97 digs/set (388 for the sesason). Jamie Armstrong is the team's leading blocker with 74 total blocks for the season (0.96 blocks/set).


 

 

The Rams (12-11, 4-5 A-10) split their most recent A-10 weekend, dropping a 3-0 match vs. Dayton before defeating Xavier in four sets.

Kayla Wilson is the top attacker for Rhody with 3.86 kills/set and she holds a team-best .215 hitting percentage (351-137-997). Annie Nelson has accumulated 582 assists on the season (8.95 assists/set) while the passing is split up between Wilson (3.02 digs/set), Lindsey Potts (2.92 digs/set) and Katherine Kolodziej (2.72 digs/set).

Friday's match will be streamed live on GoXavier.com. Fans coming out to the match on Friday are encouraged to wear their best Halloween costume as there is a contest for the best costume of the night.
