Musketeers Fall To GW in Three Games
WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a matchup of the last two Atlantic 10 Tournament Champions, homestanding George Washington swept Xavier on Saturday night, 3-0 (30-28, 30-25, 30-28).
The teams now hold identical 14-10 overall and 5-4 Atlantic 10 records. They are tied for third place in the Atlantic 10 Conference in a race to qualify for the four-team A-10 Championships which are scheduled to be held at Xavier on November 22 and 23.
Freshman Meggie Hoffman had her 14th double-double of the year with 16 kills and 11 digs for Xavier but it was not enough to counter a GW attack that saw three Colonials reach double figures in kills. Sarah Hokom had 13 kills while Lindsey Vernand and Ruth Lazzari had 12 and 11 respectively.
Sophomore setter Molly Martin led the way defensively with 19 digs to go along with her 35 assists.
Senior Katey Wygant and freshman Jordan Brightwell added 17 and 11 digs a piece for XU, but the Colonials took advantage of a 12-5 edge in blocks and a 49-45 lead in kills.
Xavier will next travel up I-75 to take on A-10 rival Dayton on Friday at 7 p.m.
