CINCINNATI - Since the schedule was released late last spring, Xavier volleyball has awaited the start of BIG EAST Conference play. Xavier and Butler, two schools that officially became members of the conference on July 1, will meet on Friday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse in the first BIG EAST match for each team.
The Musketeers bring a 7-6 record into the match, while the Bulldogs enter at 12-2. The match is going to be a battle of strengths. Offensively, Xavier ranks in the top 30 in the nation in kills (26th) and assists (27th). Butler has one of the top-ranked defenses in the country, ranking eighth in blocks.
In last season's two meetings as members of the Atlantic 10, Xavier took both matches in straight sets. Sarah Brown had 15 kills in the first match and Brown and Alex Smith each tallied 16 kills in the second match.
Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse on Butler's campus in Indianapolis.
