WILMINGTON, N.C. - In a three-game sweep, Xavier defeated UNC-Wilmington to claim the Sleep Inn Battle at the Beach championship, 30-18, 30-17 and 30-20. The Musketeers end the weekend 3-0, which marks the first time since 2003 that XU has started with a perfect 3-0 mark.

Xavier's middle hitters took charge in the first game as Jill Quayle and Astyn Bjorklund each recorded five and six kills, respectively, on the game. Setter Jenn Welsh dished out 18 assists and helped the Musketeers record a .341 hitting percentage, while libero Jordan Brightwell notched eight digs en route to the 30-18 win.

XU poured on another 20 kills in the second game and had a sizzling .429 hitting percentage. Kate Duchek led the way with seven kills with Danielle Skrajewski and Bjorklund each tallying four apiece. The Xavier frontline continued its dominance as it held the Seahawks to a .086 percentage and only eight kills in the game.

In the third game, the Musketeers continued to dominate the middle as Skrajewski and Bjorklund each recorded six and four kills, respectively. UNC-Wilmington battled back and kept the game close until back-to-back kills by Bjorklund and Duchek pushed the score to 26-17.

Four Musketeers tallied double digit kills with Duchek earning game-high honors with 17 to go along with a .324 hitting percentage on 34 swings. Skrajewski and Bjorklund tallied 14 and 13 kills, respectively, with Skrajewski adding her first double-double of the season after recording 16 digs. Brightwell notched double digit digs as well with 14 on the match, while Quayle ended with a team-high .500 hitting percentage and 10 kills.

Xavier's Carley Horvath was named most valuable player of the tournament and joined teammates Kate Duchek and Jenn Welsh on the all-tournament team.

The Musketeers improve to 3-0 on the season, while UNC-Wilmington now stands at 2-1 overall. Xavier will travel to Minnesota to compete in the Diet Coke Classic next weekend. Teams in the field include North Dakota State, Central Florida and the host Golden Gophers. XU's first match will be at 5:00 pm against Central Florida.
