Sammi McCloud Named Volleyball Assistant Coach
Aug. 5, 2011
CINCINNATI - Xavier volleyball head coach Mike Johnson has announced the addition of Sammi McCloud as assistant coach to his staff for the 2011 season. McCloud is a former All-American and Atlantic 10 Player of the Year at Saint Louis and she played professionally in France as well.
"I am very excited for the opportunity to work with coach Johnson and such a talented group of athletes," comments McCloud. "Volleyball has always played such a major role in my life and I look forward to contributing to a successful Xavier program."
McCloud replaces former associate head coach Christy Pfeffenberger who resigned her position at Xavier to accept an assistant coaching position at Notre Dame in July.
"In Jim Collins' book, Good to Great, the ideal of getting the `right people on the bus' is fundamental to building a great team," said Johnson. "Sammi has all of the traits exhibited by the best in the business. She is intelligent, passionate, and driven. Her high-level playing experience and knowledge of the A-10 is simply a bonus. Her undeniably-positive energy is sure to be infectious and fits very well within the culture we are building at Xavier. I believe between Sammi and Claire Paszkiewicz that we have a tremendous staff poised to take a run at the A-10 Championship."
For the past year McCloud has been in Terville, France, playing professionally for Terville Florange Olympique Club. She served as a right side blocker and primary passer on the court throughout all rotations. Her team ended the season with a win over Hainut for a first-place finish in the league.
Over her four-year career at Saint Louis, McCloud was twice named A-10 Player of the Year (2008, 2009) becoming the first player in SLU's history to earn the honor, and was a seven-time A-10 Player of the Week. As a freshman, McCloud was named the A-10 Rookie of the Year and the A-10 Championship Most Outstanding Player. She was also twice named All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)
McCloud graduated from Saint Louis in May of 2010 with a bachelor of arts degree in community/women's studies.
