CINCINNATI - The Xavier volleyball team has announced four newcomers that will be joining the team for the 2008 season. Three freshman and one transfer will join the eight returning members of the squad that earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament at-large bid in 2007.

Sophomore Shannon Wells - Blacklick, Ohio - Bishop Hartley - L/DS
2007... started in all 36 matches the Yellow Jackets played in and saw action in 112 games... initially started as a defensive specialist but stepped in at libero for the last 10 regular season matches... during the 10 matches played as libero, Wells averaged 5.03 digs per game... finished the season with 400 digs, a 3.57 digs/game average and 30 services aces... West Virginia State finished 22-14 overall and 15-3 in league play.

High School… played for Max Miller at Bishop Hartley High School in Columbus, Ohio... helped lead her team to back-to-back Central Catholic League and Central District Championships in 2005 and 2006... the 2006 squad, her senior year, was Regional Runner-up and the teams combined for a 44-10 overall record and a 15-1 CCL mark over those two seasons... she was a varsity team co-captain in 2006 and was named the 2005-06 varsity defensive MVP... Wells was also named the JV Offensive Player of the Year and MVP and the 2003 freshman team Offensive MVP... played for the Mintonette Volleyball Club.

Personal… an education major... daughter of Thom and Sherry Wells... nicknamed "Shan" or "Swells"... born June 14, 1989 in Columbus, Ohio.

Freshman Michelle Matia - Westlake, Ohio - Magnificat - MB
High School… a native of Westlake, Ohio, Matia played for Magnificat High School under head coach Mike Cannon... as a middle blocker, she tallied 224 kills, 85 solo blocks and 148 assisted blocks her senior year... helped lead her team to a regional title and state semifinals appearance her senior season... was named the Plain Dealer Player of the Week and to the First Team All-District and Second Team All-Ohio... played club ball for the Cleveland Volleyball Company.




Personal… a psychology major... daughter of Jack and Barb Matia... worked as a volunteer tutor at St. Rocco’s and STAIRS as well as volunteering at The Key women’s shelter... born October 11, 1990 in Oberlin, Ohio... her father played football for Drake University.

Freshman Emily Mayers - Fort Wayne, Ind. - Bishop Dwenger - MB
High School… a Fort Wayne, Ind. native, Mayers earned three varisty letters in volleyball at Bishop Dwenger High School under head coach John Minnick... helped lead her team to three consecutive Summit Athletic Conference preseason tournament titles in 2005, ‘06 and ‘07 as well as SAC postseason titles in ‘06 and ‘07... was a team co-captain her senior year and named to the First Team All-Area SAC squad her sophomore, junior and senior seasons... received All-Northeast Indiana Honorable Mention her sophomore year, Second Team her junior year and First Team honors her senior year... a member of the National Honor Society, Mayers earned Honorable Mention All-State Academic Team honors as well... in addition to playing volleyball, she earned two varsity letters in basketball and one letter in track... played club ball for the Fort Wayne Volleyball Club.


Personal… undecided on a major... daughter of Larry and Margaret Mayers... born March 30, 1990 in Fort Wayne, Indiana... her father played basketball at Hanover College... was a high school teammate of current Xavier volleyball player Shannon Voors... volunteered at the Women’s Care Center.

Freshman Kathryn Traut - Pittsburgh, Pa. - Mt. Lebanon - MB
High School… a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Traut was a prep standout at Mt. Lebanon High School… earned four varsity letters in volleyball playing under head coach Dawn Begor... was a team captain her senior year and helped lead the team to the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) Class AAA title and a quarterfinal appearance in the PIAA Class AAA state tournament in 2007... Traut was named to the First Team All-WPIAL her sophomore, junior and senior years and was selected as the girls volleyball Most Valuable Player by the McMurray (Pa.) Almanac... was named to the Pennsylvania All-State squad in 2005, ‘06 and ‘07... she was a member of the National Honors Society, Student Council and Spanish Club... played club ball for the Renaissance Volleyball Club.


Personal… a business-undecided major... daughter of Jim and Cathy Traut... born July 21, 1989 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania... her sister plays volleyball at Duke University... volunteered as a tutor for elementary school children and also as a coach at volleyball camp.
