CINCINNATI - The 2013 Xavier women's volleyball schedule has been released by head coach Mike Johnson and features matches against four teams that participated in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, including Final 4 participant Michigan.
"I'm really excited about our 2013 schedule," said Johnson. "Our vision is to grow into one of the top programs the country has to offer. And to accomplish that aim, we look to play the very best teams we can find year in and year out. I feel we have put together a tough, challenging slate that will test our mettle from beginning to end."
The Musketeers open the season as host of the Xavier Invitational. Michigan, annual ACC contender Clemson and Northern Kentucky will participate in the event, which is scheduled for the weekend of Aug. 30-31 at Cintas Center.
Xavier will also play in the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational (Sept. 6-7), the Sports Imports DC Koehl Classic hosted by Ohio State (Sept. 13-14) and the UC Irvine Invitational (Sept. 20-21). The Musketeers' match against Ohio State will be the second meeting against an NCAA Tournament team of the season for XU, as the Buckeyes advanced to the second round in 2012.
A new era in the BIG EAST will kick off with a 7 p.m. meeting against Butler in Indianapolis on Friday, Sept. 27. XU will play its first home game in its new conference on Oct. 4 versus Seton Hall. The conference slate features home-and-home series with the other nine members of the BIG EAST.
"Of course in addition to our non-conference slate, this year has the added excitement of joining the BIG EAST," Johnson state. "There are certainly many unknowns as we will have to quickly learn the playing styles of these new opponents. But progressive change is thrilling and this is a challenge we look forward to taking head-on."
Highlights of the conference schedule include two matchups against 2012 NCAA teams Creighton and Marquette. Creighton, which Xavier faces at home on Oct. 5 and on the road on Oct. 18, advanced to the second round of the tournament a year ago. Xavier and Marquette, which was eliminated by Creighton in the opening round, will meet in Cincinnati on Nov. 2 and then again in Milwaukee, Wis., on Nov. 22.
The BIG EAST Championship will be contested from Nov. 29-30 in Omaha, Neb., and will feature the top four teams from the regular-season conference standings.
