CINCINNATI - Xavier volleyball's 2013 recruiting class received High Honorable Mention accolade by PrepVolleyball.com. All three of Xavier's signees were individually ranked among the top 250 players in the country by Prep Volleyball, the nation's premier volleyball recruiting source.
Outside hitter Abbey Bessler (Erlanger, Kentucky), setter Mackenzi Humm (Crystal Lake, Illinois) and middle blocker Alexis Newsome (Pickerington, Ohio) inked with the Musketeers during the fall signing period.
"Recruiting is an imperfect science," said volleyball head coach Mike Johnson. "We obviously think Mackenzi, Abbey and Alexis are very special but we also acknowledge that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Earning national recognition in this manner though is a great sign that we are far from the only beholder that sees the beauty in this group."
Bessler is a 6'2 outside hitter who raked in the awards during her four-year career at Saint Henry High School (Erlanger, Ky.), including a 2012 Under Armor High School All-America Honorable Mention and two-time KVCA First Team All-State Class A.
Humm is a 5'11 setter who will come to Xavier ranked on a list of 20 players who sit just outside the top 100 in Prep Volleyball's rankings. Humm has a list of achievements she earned during her career at Prairie Ridge High School (Crystal Lake, Ill.) that include all-state honorable mention, Northwest Herald All-Area Second Team and Chicago Sun Times Third Team All-Area.
Newsome is a 6'1 middle blocker hailing from Pickerington Central High School (Reynoldsburg, Ohio). Known for her superior athletic ability, she was named Pickerington Central's team MVP the last two seasons, as well as all-region honorable mention both years. The four-year letter-winner earned first team all-district accolades in 2012 after a second team all-district distinction as a junior in 2011. Newsome has also displayed her athleticism as a three-year letter-winner on Pickerington Central's basketball team.
"This class is very special athletically," said Johnson. "But more importantly, these are special kids. They work hard, study hard, win the right way and will be wonderful ambassadors for our program and our university. August 9th has been circled on the calendar for some time now. We can't wait to get these girls in the gym and get started!"
The Musketeers will look to prove themselves early and often in a rigorous non-conference schedule including schools from the Big 10 and SEC. Six teams on Xavier's schedule received recruiting accolades by PrepVolleyball.com including two top 25 recruiting classes in Ohio State (11) and Michigan (25). The other schools receiving High Honorable Mention are Marquette, UCI, Clemson and Miami.
The Musketeers are looking to continue their success in the BIG EAST with these new additions. Xavier went 21-11 last season and earned its third-straight runner-up finish in both the Atlantic 10 regular season and A-10 Championship.
