CINCINNATI - Head Coach Mike Johnson has released the 2014 Xavier volleyball schedule, which features eight matches against six teams that participated in the 2013 NCAA Tournament and 11 matches versus teams that won at least 20 contests.
"I'm thrilled to announce the 2014 schedule," said Johnson. "Every year we have placed a premium on playing high quality opponents, and this year is no exception. At the end of the day, we want to be the very best and this slate offers an opportunity to prove just that.
"What is different though is the number of quality teams that will be entering the confines of the Cintas Center," continued Johnson. "I think it speaks volumes to the growth of our program that so many good teams are making their way to Cincinnati. Our fans will have many opportunities to see the fruits of the hard work and dedication that our kids put in every day. We're all looking forward to it!"
Xavier kicks off the season with the Queen City Invitational, a joint tournament with crosstown-rival Cincinnati that also brings 2013 Atlantic 10 champion Duquesne and UC Irvine to town the weekend of Aug. 29-30.
The Musketeers will then participate in the Tiger Invitational, hosted by Missouri, on Sept. 5th and 6th. The Tigers went undefeated during the regular season a year ago before being ousted in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and finishing with a 35-1 overall record. Oakland and Illinois State will also participate in the tournament.
Ohio State, Syracuse and Ohio will travel to Cincinnati for Xavier's tournament, the Millennium Hotel Invitational, which will be held Sept. 12-13. The Ohio Bobcats registered a 27-6 mark last season after winning both the MAC regular-season and conference tournament championships.
Non-conference games at Dayton (Sept. 16), at home versus Lipscomb (Sept. 19) and at Kentucky (Sept. 20) wrap up the Musketeers' 12-game non-conference schedule.
BIG EAST action opens on Sept. 26 with a trip to Washington, D.C. for a meeting against Georgetown, while the first home conference match takes place on Oct. 3 when Villanova comes to town.
Providence's volleyball team is joining the BIG EAST this season, and members of the conference will play a true home-and-home schedule with all nine other teams in the league.
An October 8th match with Marquette, the 2013 conference regular-season and tournament champions, and matches against Butler (Oct. 18) and Creighton (Nov. 7) highlights the home conference schedule. The Musketeers wrap up their regular season when they host Providence on Nov. 22.
The BIG EAST Championship is scheduled for Nov. 27-29.
Duquesne (20-10), Missouri, Ohio, Kentucky (22-9), Marquette (26-6) and Creighton (23-9) all participated in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Those teams, as well as Butler (24-8) and Lipscomb (23-8), won at least 20 games a year ago.
