Kirsta Solberg Named Assistant Volleyball Coach
May 11, 2012
CINCINNATI - Xavier volleyball head coach Mike Johnson announced the addition of Kirsta Solberg as assistant coach on his staff for the 2012 season. Solberg played her collegiate volleyball at IPFW where she helped the Mastodons to the Division I Independent Tournament Championship in 2002.
"I would like to thank Mike Johnson, Becky Jackson, and Mike Bobinski for giving me the honor and opportunity to be a part of the Xavier Volleyball staff," said Solberg. "The Xavier community is a first-class institution and I am excited to work in this environment and continue to grow as a coach under Coach Johnson and the excellent Xavier volleyball program. I would also like to thank Dr. Arthur Snyder, Martin Neuhoff, and the Indiana Tech staff for their support and mentoring during my tenure at Indiana Tech."
Solberg comes to Xavier from Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, Ind., where she has been the head volleyball coach since 2007. In the last five seasons, Solberg led the Warriors to a 160-49 record, earning the WHAC Conference Championship title in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. She has earned WHAC Coach of the Year honors in those four seasons as well.
"While the circle of Division I athletics can be quite fraternal, I have always believed that great coaches can be found across all divisions at any level," said head coach Mike Johnson. " In Kirsta, I believe that we unearthed just one of those examples. She has proven to be a winner capable of high achievement. More importantly, I believe she has done so with character and class. She is a great fit for the Xavier family and we are very excited for her to get started."
Solberg most recently recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association in its annual Thirty Under 30 Award in the spring of 2011. During her time at Indiana Institute of Technology, Solberg also served as the Assistant Athletic Director from 2009-2012 where she was responsible for overseeing budgets and recruiting among other duties. Since 2008 she has been the Wellness Center Director and has taught college classes about nutrition and wellness.
Solberg also has international experience. While in college she played with an exhibition team that played in Brazil and Puerto Rico. Upon graduating from IPFW she played professionally in Copenhagen, Denmark for seven months. She has also coached college and high school athletes that have played in Barbados, Italy, Austria and Scotland.
Solberg graduated from IPFW in May 2004 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design and completed her Master's in Business Administration from IPFW in May 2007.
