CINCINNATI - Xavier University Athletic Director Mike Bobinski announced today that he has accepted the resignation of Floyd Deaton, who just completed his 20th season as the school's head volleyball coach.

"I want to thank Floyd for his 20 years of dedicated service to Xavier University," Bobinski said. "His hard work has helped our program enjoy solid growth over the past two decades. We wish him success in all of his future endeavors."

Deaton, the winningest coach in Xavier volleyball history, led Xavier to 411 victories and 246 losses in 20 seasons, including a 20-12 mark this past fall. Deaton, a four-time selection as Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, led Xavier to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearances in 2001 and 2007. Xavier won two Atlantic 10 regular season titles (1998, 2004) and a conference tournament championship (2001) during Deaton's tenure.

Deaton, 55, is credited with turning around the Xavier volleyball program when he arrived for his first season in 1990. Xavier had five straight losing seasons prior to his arrival but those were soon forgotten as Deaton led his first Xavier team to a 19-17 record. The Musketeers produced 19 seasons of .500 or better during Deaton's 20-year tenure.

"I have a lot of great memories from my 20 years at Xavier," said Deaton. "The greatest source of pride for me has been playing a part in the development of tremendous young ladies. Xavier is a great University. I hope the next head coach builds on our success and takes the program to even greater heights."

In his 20 years, Deaton coached three AVCA All-Northeast Region players, one AVCA All-America Honorable Mention, 48 All-Conference selections (one MCC and 47 A-10), 14 A-10 All-Rookie team selections and 16 A-10 Academic All-Conference selections. He also produced the three A-10 Players of the Year, two A-10 Setters of the Year, three A-10 Rookies of the Year, four A-10 Student-Athletes of the Year, a 2004 Third Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America of the Year and nine Academic All-America All-District selections.

Deaton, a 1978 graduate of West Liberty State College, came to Xavier after a successful high school coaching career at Wheeling (W.Va.) Central Catholic High School.
