CINCINNATI - This past weekend the Xavier volleyball team wrapped up its spring schedule with a trip across town to Cincinnati, competing against Ohio State, Kent State, Morehead State and the host Bearcats. For head coach Floyd Deaton, the spring season has been an overall success and learning experience for the team.

"We opened up the spring at Michigan on March 27, playing drills in the morning and matches at night," commented Deaton. "We played against Western Michigan, Toledo and Michigan as well. Everybody got to play but it really let us know what we needed to work on which was our competitive level; we didn't compete well. As a team I thought that we could have competed harder. The games always count whether it's in the spring or the fall."

The next stop for the Musketeers was a trip to Louisville to the Ohio Valley Volleyball Center on April 10. XU faced off against Kentucky, Western Kentucky, Western Michigan for the second time this spring and wrapped up the day against Ole Miss.

"We then went down to Louisville and ended up 2-2 on the day," Deaton said. "We started off not competing well against Kentucky, which is a very tough team; they are top 25 in the country. I saw more bright spots than I did in Michigan but we didn't serve well and our passing was off. We played well against Western Kentucky. We competed a lot more there and made some positive steps. They were in the hunt and took care of business."

The spring season wrapped up on Saturday, April 24, with a trip over to Cincinnati.

"We went to Cincinnati in the last spring tournament and played well," mentioned Deaton. "Several people got some good experience. In hindsight, we were playing 10 players and mixing things up and letting people play different positions. I walked away knowing that we were going in the right direction. Some girls got some quality experience and did a nice job. As the spring season went on, they got more comfortable. Emily Mayers stepped out of her comfort zone and played really well. Chelsea [Campbell] did a nice job on the left side, even though we had been working her on the right side. "
