CINCINNATI - The Xavier volleyball team swept the Rhode Island Rams Sunday afternoon at Cintas Center 25-19, 25-20, 25-21. Sophomore Sarah Brown led the Musketeers with 15 kills, while freshman Aubree Smith had her second double-double of the season.
The win improves the Musketeers' record to 16-9 overall and 8-3 in the Atlantic 10 conference. The Rams fall to 12-13 on the season and 4-7 in conference action.
Brown had a .323 hitting percentage on the day (15-5-31) to go with her seven digs. Red-shirt sophomore and senior Michelle Matia were close to notching double digits in kills, tallying nine each. Matia added six digs and three assisted blocks. Smith had a sensational .562 hitting percentage (9-0-16) to go with her three digs, solo block and two assisted blocks.
Aubree Smith used 35 assists and 10 digs to notch her second double-double of the season. Smith utilized a .455 hitting percentage (5-0-11) and also assisted on a block. Junior Stephanie Vorherr was the top passer for the Musketeers, getting under 15 digs.
The Rams were led by Britta Baarstad who had eight kills. The passing was divided up between Candice Kolkka and Lindsay Potts who tallied 12 and 10 digs respectively. Kolkka had a double-double herself, adding 23 assists. Jill Anderson had two solo blocks and three assisted blocks to her name.
The Musketeers outhit the Rams .244 to .160, but both teams were even in the blocking department with six and five team blocks respectively.
Xavier closes out its three-match home stand on Friday, Nov. 4 when it plays host to Dayton. The match, which will begin at 7 p.m., will also be Senior Night when Michelle Matia, Kathryn Traut and Emily Mayers will be honored for their four years of commitment to Xavier volleyball.
