Volleyball Suffers 3-0 Setback at No. 17 Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio - The Xavier volleyball dropped a 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-12) decision at No. 17 Dayton Friday night at UD's Frericks Center. This was XU's first straight-set loss since losing 3-0 to then-19th ranked Tennessee in the first match of the season.
The Musketeers were led by senior Shannon Voors with nine kills while sophomore Stephanie Vorherr got under a match-high 17 digs. Senior Claire Paszkiewicz recorded 24 assists to go with six digs and three assisted blocks.
Dayton (19-3, 10-0 A-10) went up 7-2 early on the Musketeers, forcing XU into a timeout. The lead was eight, 15-7, when Paszkiewicz' tip started a 5-1 run for Xavier. A service ace from Vorherr cut the Flyer lead to three, 17-14, but Dayton stretched the advantage back to five, 21-16. A 3-0 run for the Musketeers pulled them within two, 22-20, as the Flyers called for a break.
Back-to-back Flyer attack errors and a service ace from Voors knotted the two teams at 23 apiece. A point for each team and the score was tied again before a Musketeer attack error gave the advantage to the Flyers, 25-24. UD took the first set on an assisted block, 26-24. Senior Chelsea Campbell and freshman Sarah Brown each tallied three kills in the frame for the Musketeers.
Xavier (14-8, 7-3 A-10) scored the first four points of the second set capped off with a kill from Voors forcing Dayton into a timeout. The lead was four again, 6-2, before Dayton rattled off three straight to pull within one, 6-5. UD's Amanda Cowdrey even the game at 10-10 with a kill and a Flyer block gave Dayton's its first advantage of the set, 12-11.
The Flyers put together a 7-1 run to jump out to a 20-13 lead after trailing most of the first half of the second set. Up seven again, 22-15, Dayton cruised to the 25-16 second-set win to take a two games to none advantage into the intermission. Voors led the Musketeers in the second frame with four kills.
The Musketeers started fast again in the third set taking a 4-1 lead in the early going. The Flyers battled back and even the set at five-all and on the strength of a 3-0 run they went ahead, 8-7. A kill from Campbell pulled XU to within one, 10-9, but UD scored 12 unanswered for a 22-9 advantage to put the game out of reach. Holding match point at 24-12, the Flyers to the match in straight sets with a kill from Becky Novacek.
The Flyers were led by Lindsay Fletemier with a match-high 12 kills and Cowdrey with a team-best 15 digs. Yvonne Martin added 11 kills for UD to go with five assisted blocks.
The Musketeers return home on Sunday as they are set to square off against Saint Louis for Senior Day. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at Cintas Center and four senior team members will be recognize prior to the match. The game will be streamed live via goxavier.com at no cost to the viewer.
