Musketeers Sweep Rhode Island in A-10 Matchup

KINGSTON, R.I. - Seniors Astyn Bjorklund and Danielle Skrajewski combined to total 29 kills and a .530 hitting percentage to help Xavier sweep Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 action on Saturday afternoon at Keaney Gymnasium. The Musketeers took the match with scores of 30-27, 30-21 and 30-24. The win moves the Blue and White to 16-10 on the season and 9-2 in the A-10, while URI falls to 6-20 overall and 2-7 in conference action.

Skrajewski led the way offensively for the Musketeers as the outside hitter ended with a match-high 16 kills and .560 hitting percentage. She was complimented by her classmate Bjorklund who added 13 kills and a .500 hitting percentage to go along with one ace and one solo block. Setter Jenn Welsh dished out 40 assists to move her A-10 best average to 13.55 assists per game and added eight digs. Freshman Lauren Kaminsky continued to shine at the libero position as she tallied a team-high 10 digs. Classmate Kelly Ruth was second on the team in digs as the freshman notched nine on the afternoon. Juniors Jenni Horvath and Jill Quayle each contributed six kills with Quayle adding a team-high four block assists.

As a team, the Musketeers posted their fourth highest hitting percentage this season against the Rams. The team finished with 49 kills on 100 attempts with only 13 hitting errors for a .360 percentage. Seven team blocks and 43 digs by XU held Rhode Island to a .148 hitting percentage but URI was able to earn eight aces compared to only six by Xavier.

The team will have two weeks off before wrapping up the A-10 schedule, home slate and the season at Cintas Center against Saint Louis and Duquesne. The Musketeers will battle the Billikens on Friday night at 7:00 pm, while XU will take on the Dukes on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm. The match against Duquesne will also be senior night and the last time Astyn Bjorklund, Ashley Norris and Danielle Skrajewski will put on the home uniforms and play in front of the home crowd. The match against SLU will be a battle for second place in the A-10 West Division and a three-seed in the upcoming A-10 Championships.
