SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Senior outside hitter Sarah Brown became the 11th member of Xavier's 1,000 kill-1,000 dig club after posting a match-high 19 kills to lead Xavier (15-8, 6-2 BIG EAST) past Seton Hall (11-12, 3-6 BIG EAST) in four sets (25-22, 20-25, 26-24, 27-25).
Brown was on the attack early and often in the match. The 19 kills pushed her to 1,007 kills for her career. She added 23 digs, which runs her career total to 1,077 and puts her in the exclusive club at Xavier.
"I'm so very happy for Sarah," said head coach Mike Johnson. "Tonight she was flat out awesome. To be as excellent as she has been for us on both sides of the ball speaks volumes to how complete a player she is and has been for the past four years. We are so fortunate to have her."
XU closed out the opening set, 25-22, after winning five of the final seven points of the stanza. The veteran Musketeers led the team in the opening set. Brown (5), senior Alex Smith (4) and junior Alex Blair (4) combined for 13 kills. Junior Aubree Smith handed out 17 assists in the frame.
Seton Hall opened a 6-3 lead and controlled the second set throughout before closing it, 25-20. The Pirates were paced by Molly Grammer's four kills and two blocks. Aubree Smith had another strong set, handing out 17 more assists.
Coming out of intermission Xavier responded by opening a 9-3 advantage and withstood Seton Hall's rally to win, 26-24. Aubree Smith dished 15 more assists and Abbey Bessler put down five kills and three blocks.
Xavier twice staved off set point in the fourth set, but closed out the frame and match, 27-25. Trailing 25-24, the Musketeers used a block by Bessler, a kill from Sofia Petereson and then a kill by Bessler to finish the match.
"What an incredible match," stated Johnson. "Every single point was a grind. Defensively, both teams really brought it tonight. I am proud of our team. Seton Hall played absolutely fantastic"
It was a stellar night for several of the Musketeers who registered career-marks. Aubree Smith posted a sensational double-double She registered 63 assists and 23 digs, both career-highs. Bessler connected on her team-leading 16th double-double with 17 kills and 16 digs. Blair tallied a career-best 10 blocks in the match, while also adding eight kills. Rounding out the career-marks was Lauren Metzger, who picked up 27 digs.
Following a four-match road swing, Xavier returns home to the friendly confines of Cintas Center for contests against DePaul and Marquette. XU and DU will take the court at 7 p.m. on Friday.
