Volleyball Suffers First A-10 Loss at Saint Louis

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - The Xavier volleyball team suffered its first conference loss of the season Friday night at the hands of the Saint Louis Billikens, 3-0, in the Bauman-Eberhardt Center. The Musketeers now sit at 20-7 on the season and 9-1 in Atlantic 10 play. The Billikens improve to 18-5 overall and 7-2 in conference action.
XU was led by sophomore Kelly Ruth who got under a team-high 12 digs and added nine kills on the night. Senior Jill Quayle also added nine kills and two solo blocks while senior Jenni Horvath tallied nine digs. Freshman Claire Paszkiewicz served up two aces on the night.
Saint Louis opened the match with a 12-4 run right into a Xavier timeout. Out of the break, SLU continued to control the game and took a 4-0 run into a 12-point lead, 24-12. The Musketeers scored three unanswered points to cut the advantage to nine but were unable to overcome the deficit. The Billikens took game one, 30-20.
In game two the Musketeers kept the frame close. After SLU used a 5-1 run to spread its lead to five, 10-5, XU was able to tie the game at 14-all. The Billikens' lead would not be larger than three and the Muketeers tied the game again at 27 apiece. Although there were eight ties in the game, XU was never able to take the lead. SLU picked up a 30-28 game-two victory.
Saint Louis headed into game three with a 2-0 advantage but Xavier jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead. The Billikens tied the frame at 9-9 and would control game three the rest of the way. SLU used a 7-1 run to take an eight point lead, 20-12. XU cut the advantage to five but the Billikens ended the game with a six-point win, 30-24.
For Saint Louis Bridget Fonke had a match-high 19 kills and Whitney Behrens got under a match-high 20 digs.
