NEW YORK - In a match televised on ESPN3, Xavier volleyball swept St. John's on the strength of 14 kills from Sarah Brown. The Musketeers pushed their record to 14-8 overall and 5-2 in the BIG EAST. The loss drops the Red Storm to 14-10 and 3-5 in conference action.
"This was a great match," said head coach Mike Johnson. " We have been putting a lot of emphasis into sustaining excellence over time. I thought we did a wonderful job of that tonight. This group is really getting better! I'm proud of their work."
Trailing 22-24 in the opening set, XU rallied to win the next four points and take the frame, 26-24. Makayla Agin put down a pair of kills for the final two scores.
Xavier found itself in another hole in the second set, 18-17, but responded with an 8-0 run to pull ahead in the match 2-0. The rally was a total team effort, with kills from Abbey Bessler and Sofia Peterson and blocks from Bessler and Alex Blair. Aubree Smith added a service ace to the mix as well.
The third set was all Xavier from the onset. Xavier built a 10-4 lead and St. John's was only able to whittle the margin to a point, 13-12, before XU pushed back out to a comfortable advantage. Brown gave Xavier the set, 25-21, with the match-ending kill.
Brown led the Musketeers with a match-high 14 kills, while also tallying eight digs in the match. The senior outside hitter stands 12 kills shy of 1,000 for her career.
The Musketeers will wrap up a four-game road swing with a 7 p.m. match at Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J. XU defeated SHU in four sets when the two teams met earlier this season.
