CINCINNATI - Xavier used a balanced offensive attack and disciplined defense to defeat Rhode Island in straight sets (25-13, 25-12, 25-13) on Friday night at Cintas Center. Alex Smith led the Musketeers with eight kills and Sarah Brown added 15 digs.
Xavier (12-9, 4-2 A-10) closed out the first set, 25-13, on the strength of an 11-3 run. Rhody was only able to connect on seven kills and posted a .097 hitting percentage in the game.
A 10-4 run to open the second set put the Musketeers firmly in control and helped them to a 25-12 win. XU's defense limited URI to just six kills and forced 11 attack errors in the set resulting in a hitting percentage of -.147.
The Musketeers closed out the match win a 25-13 win in the third game, with head coach Mike Johnson using 12 different players in the set.
"I thought we did an excellent job with our serve and serve-receive tonight," said Johnson. "We were able to keep Rhode Island off-balance with our serve and our service reception was solid all evening. I'm also proud of our team for staying disciplined on defense. Offensively, we distributed the ball very well and a balanced attack is very hard to defend."
Five Musketeers finished the match with at least five kills. In addition to Smith's eight, Brown and Amé White both chipped in seven. Setter Aubree Smith registered six kills to go along with 26 assists and Alex Blair posted five kills.
Led by three service aces from Blair, Xavier finished the match with nine total aces. Five different Musketeers recorded an ace in the match. XU did not surrender a single ace to URI and benefitted from six service errors by the Rams. Xavier finished the match with a hitting percentage of .284, while holding Rhode Island to .043 on the evening.
Britta Baarstad provided most of the offensive firepower for the Rams, recording nine kills. Ashley Tennant added 15 digs in the effort.
Xavier will be back in action tomorrow evening against Fordham. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start time. Live stats and video stream will be available at GoXavier.com.
