White's 17 Kills Lead Xavier In Win Over Cincinnati
Oct. 3, 2012
CINCINNATI - Xavier won an exciting five-set match (23-25, 28-26, 25-21, 24-26, 15-9) against crosstown-rival Cincinnati on Wednesday night at Cintas Center. Amé White led the Musketeers with a team-high 17 kills and completed a double-double with 12 digs.
Xavier (11-8) and Cincinnati (4-13) played a tight first set until the Bearcats grabbed control with a four-point run, giving them a 22-19 lead. XU pulled within a point, 24-23, but a timeout and kill by UC ended the set.
In game two, the Musketeers built as much as a five-point lead, 21-15, only to watch the Bearcats storm back and tie the set. The two squads exchanged a series of side-outs before Xavier capitalized on a pair of Bearcat errors to close out the set, 28-26.
Coming out of intermission Xavier built a slim two-point lead, 14-12, before going on a 4-1 run that was finished with three-straight kills by Kelsey Dunaway. Jordanne Scott pulled the Bearcats back within two points, 23-21, with four kills in a 4-1 spurt by UC. However, a kill and service ace by Sarah Brown closed out the set and gave Xavier a 2-1 lead in the match.
With Xavier trailing 12-9 in the fourth set, the Musketeers put together an 11-3 run to gain the lead. Similar to the second set, the Bearcats put together five-unanswered points and a 9-2 run. A kill by White and assisted block by both White and Alex Smith evened the score at 24. UC closed out the set with a block on XU's attack followed by a Musketeer attack error.
The fifth and final set started with a controversial point. Xavier had two players get their hands on a Bearcat attack with the ball falling towards the outside of the court on UC's side of the net. White gave chase, but the play was whistled dead. Xavier contended that the play should have continued, but, after meeting, the referees ruled that no replay was warranted and UC was awarded the point.
Xavier conceded the next point but reeled off eight-unanswered points on Alex Blair's service before the side-exchange. Blair and the Musketeers won the next point before a service error ended the run with Xavier holding a 10-3 advantage.
UC refused to back down and rattled off a 3-1 spurt to cut Xavier's lead to four, 13-9, and force a Musketeer timeout. Dunaway ended the run with a kill and a solo block by Blair ended the set and match, 15-9.
"We showed a lot of resiliency tonight," said head coach Mike Johnson. "It was a great team effort and we received contributions from a bunch of different people. Our defense did a great job limiting a very good offensive team. Across the board, we made great plays when we had to."
Brown joined White with a double-double of her own, registering 14 kills and 12 digs. Dunaway provided Xavier with its third double-digit-kill performance, posting 10 kills in the match.
As a team, XU combined for 14.5 blocks, including a career-high seven from White. The Musketeers entered the match limiting opponents to a .150 hitting percentage and held UC to .117.
The Bearcats were led by Scott with 22 kills, with Emily Hayden adding 11. Libero Emily MacIntyre registered a match-high 32 digs.
Xavier will be back in action next Monday, when the team travels to A-10-rival Dayton for a 7 p.m. match at the Frericks Center.
