Mike Johnson's challenge to play for the love of the game, Xavier showed that passion Saturday afternoon in a 3-0 win over Butler (25-17, 25-11, 25-19).
"We talk all the time about playing for the love of the game," said Johnson. "Our team executed technically, but more importantly they got lost in the moment and had fun."
Xavier (9-7, 2-0 A-10) came out ready to play against Butler (10-6, 0-2 A-10). XU put together a 12-3 scoring run, which Butler tried to break up with a timeout. The Musketeers pushed even harder after the timeout finishing the set, 25-17, and recording 15 kills.
The Musketeers were relentless in the second set, coming up early with a 7-0 run and taking a 9-3 lead against the Bulldogs. Xavier did not become complacent and later went on a 13-4 run to take complete control of the set. With the help of a .448 attack percentage and another 15 kills the Musketeers took set two, 25-11.
After being down 2-0 the Bulldogs were not going to back down. Stephanie Kranda helped the Bulldogs stay close to the Musketeers earning all six of her kills in the third set. However, the Musketeers stayed consistent with their play and took the game and match with a 25-19 win.
Sarah Brown and Amé White contributed 15 and 10 kills, respectively, to Xavier's 41 kills for the match. As a team, Xavier registered seven service aces with Makayla Agin and Aubree Smith combining for four of the total.
Big hitters for Butler were Belle Obert with 10 kills and Stephanie Kranda finishing with six kills, all in the third set.
Xavier is back on the court Friday night at Temple in another A-10 conference match. The match is set to begin at 7 pm.
