IRVINE, Calif. - Alex Blair's season-high 11 kills weren't enough for Xavier, which dropped the opening match of the UC Irvine Invite in straight sets (25-22, 25-23, 25-13) to Fresno State. The loss drops Xavier to 7-4 overall, while Fresno State improves to 5-5.

Blair, a junior middle blocker, registered her 11 kills on the strength of a .444 hitting percent. Fellow middle blocker Alex Smith, a senior, posted eight kills on a .467 hitting percent. Senior outside hitter Sarah Brown added 14 digs for XU.

Xavier trailed by as many as four points in the opening set before rallying to even the game at 21-all. Fresno State went on a 4-1 run to close out the set, 25-22. Again in the second set, the Musketeers fell behind by as many as four points. This time XU was only able to pull within a point before falling, 25-23.

The third set was all Fresno State. After the game was tied at four, the Bulldogs put four rallies of at least four points to close out the Musketeers, 25-13.

A short lay-off awaits the Musketeers, who will be back in action at 10:30 p.m. (ET) tonight when they face UC Irvine.
