Sept. 16, 2011
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Xavier volleyball team fell to No. 18 Michigan 25-18, 25-13, 25-27, 25-23. The Musketeers had several contributors on the night, including red-shirt sophomore Alex Smith who tallied a season-best 10 kills to go with four assisted blocks. Junior Kaela Jo Freppon added four aces, seven kills and 10 digs.
With the loss the Musketeers drop to 7-4 on the season, while the Wolverines improve to a spotless 11-0.
"I think we showed a tremendous amount of courage," said head coach Mike Johnson. "To be down 2-0 against such a tough team and in such a raucous environment took a lot of composure. If a few little plays would have gone differently, we would have been right with [Michigan] in the fifth set. The team is getting better every single day and I'm excited for the road ahead."
Freppon was accurate from the net, with a .636 hitting percentage, a match best. Senior Michelle Matia and sophomore Kelsey Dunaway added eight kills. Freshman Aubree Smith had 38 assists and junior Stephanie Vorherr got under 15 digs.
The Musketeers showed resiliency in the third set, down by as many as eight before mounting an attack that featured two potential Wolverine match points. Freppon punched in two of her service aces to give Xavier the win, 27-25.
Michigan was led by two-time Big 10 Freshman of the Week Lexi Dannemiller who had 51 assists. Lexi Erwin had a match-high 18 kills for a .308 hitting percentage.
The Musketeers will be back in action Saturday afternoon, as they take on the Rockets of Toledo. First serve is set to go off at 5:30 p.m. from Cliff Keen Arena. Stay tuned to GoXavier.com for more information and follow the action on GameTracker.
