ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Xavier volleyball team battled Texas A&M in a five-set match to hand the Aggies their first loss of the season (25-22, 18-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-11). Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Brown led the match in kills, earning a new career high with 26.
With the win, the Musketeers move to 7-3 on the season, while the Aggies drop to 9-1. Texas A&M is receiving votes in the latest AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll. This was also the first match in which the Aggies were pushed to five sets.
"This was a great team win," said head coach Mike Johnson. "It showed the power of what it means to play fundamental, disciplined volleyball. I was impressed on how we stayed together and fought, especially when things got tough. Texas A&M is a great team and we are happy to come away with this win."
Brown led all players with 26 kills for a .380 attack percentage (26-7-50). The Mineral City, Ohio native was one dig shy of her third double-double of the season, while also keying in two service aces. Freshman Aubree Smith led the match in assists with 55, two-shy of tying her career high. Smith got under six digs and tallied five kills. Sister Alex Smith added eight kills and a team-best four assisted blocks.
Junior Kaela Jo Freppon added scrappy plays, getting under a career-high 17 digs, tallying nine kills, two assisted blocks and knocking in three service aces. Classmate Stephanie Vorherr got under a team-best 22 digs.
The Musketeers battled the entire match, but the third set was marked by a huge surge by Xavier. XU was down 10-13 in the third set before it went on a 15-6 tear to win the set 25-19.
