Xavier Downs Coastal Carolina
Sept. 15, 2006 CONWAY, S.C. - In the opening match of the Microtel Inn and Suites CCU Classic on the campus of Coastal Carolina University, Xavier got back on track and defeated host Coastal Carolina 3-0. XU took the match by scores of 30-23, 30-23 and 30-16 at Kimbel Arena. The Musketeers are now 4-7 on the season, while the Lady Chanticleers drop to 2-8 overall. The opening game found XU take control early. With the score 19-18 in favor of Xavier, the Musketeers went on a 6-2 run to take its largest lead of the game at six. The Blue and White would finish the game scoring four of the last seven points with freshman Kelly Ruth providing the final kill to give the Musketeers the first game. Xavier notched 18 kills on the game with seven of them going to senior Danielle Skrajewski. Junior Jenni Horvath led the way defensively with five digs. In the second game, Xavier broke out offensively as the Musketeers posted a .324 hitting percentage with 15 kills on 34 attempts. After being down 7-6 early, XU mounted a big 7-2 run to take a lead it would not relinquish. The Blue and White would notch its largest lead at the 25-18 mark after a kill by Jill Quayle. Quayle would post five kills on the game. The third and final game found a battle early as the home team would not go down easily. Xavier would respond and take the lead for good at 7-6 after a CCU service error. With the score at 9-8 in favor of Xavier, the Musketeers would mount an impressive 13-4 run to take the lead by 10 at 22-12 before ending the game on an 8-4 spurt. Skrajewski again led the way posting 17 kills and a .533 hitting percentage to go along with seven digs. Quayle followed suit with 13 kills of her own and a .500 percentage and four block assists. Freshman Lauren Kaminsky would round out the Musketeers with 10 or more kills as the rookie notched 10 and added seven digs and two aces. Horvath would pace the Blue and White defensively with 10 digs and three block assists with Ruth adding eight.
This was only the second meeting between the two schools as XU took the first meeting 3-0 in 1993. Xavier head coach Floyd Deaton is now 2-0 against the Lady Chanticleers and was in his fourth season when the two schools matched up in the UNC-Wilmington Tournament for the first time. The win snaps a six-match skid for the Musketeers. It was the longest streak since the 2003 season when XU dropped nine in a row. The Musketeers will return to the court tomorrow morning as they play the opening match of the day against North Florida starting at 10:00 am. XU will then take a break before wrapping up the weekend against East Tennessee State at 4:30 pm. It will be the first meeting between Xavier and UNF, while ETSU holds a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series against the Blue and White. |
