COLUMBUS, Ohio - Xavier (7-2) survived an early push from IUPUI (4-6) in the first set before going on to sweep the Jaguars (25-22, 25-20, 25-23) to win its fourth-straight match. Xavier's defense led the way with 11 team blocks, while limiting IUPUI to a .040 team hitting percentage.
IUPUI jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the opening set to force an XU timeout. A 6-2 run by the Musketeers closed the gap to one, 16-15, and a 5-2 run pushed them ahead, 20-18. XU held the advantage and won the first set, 25-22.
An early 7-3 lead in the second stanza provided an early cushion for the Musketeers, but the Jaguars made a run to even the score at 14. Consecutive kills from Sarah Brown pushed Xavier ahead, 22-18, and Brown closed out the set, 25-20, with another kill.
Late in the third frame, Xavier trailed, 19-18, and took a timeout. The team responded out of the timeout with a 5-2 spurt. Alex Smith and Bessler connected on the final two kills to close out the Jaguars, 25-23.
The 13th-ranked Buckeyes await the Musketeers for the closing match of the tournament at 7 p.m. Saturday night.
