CINCINNATI - The Xavier University volleyball team was on the attack early and often in a three-set victory (25-20, 25-22, 25-21) against the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks. Abbey Bessler tallied a match-high 15 kills and added nine digs.
Led by Brown, Xavier came out swinging in the first set and built an early five-point lead. The closest Miami was able to close the margin was within two, 17-15. Following an XU timeout, Bessler put down a kill and an ace to extend the lead. Xavier closed out the set, 25-20.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair until Xavier used a 3-1 run to push ahead, 18-15. Miami took a timeout and recovered with three-unanswered points to even the score. But, Xavier responded with another 3-1 run to take control of the set before winning, 25-22.
Trailing 11-12 in the final frame, the Musketeers won six of the next seven points to grab a commanding lead. The RedHawks put together a small spurt to close the game within three, 24-21, but the rally was too late and Xavier put the match away, 25-21.
Emily McIlquham and Lauren Metzger joined Bessler and Smith with nine digs each, helping the Musketeers lead in nearly every statistical category. XU had advantages in kills (51-38), assists (48-36), digs (49-43) and hitting percentage (.342-.200).
Xavier will be back in action this weekend at the Sports Imports DC Koehl Classic hosted by Ohio State. The Musketeers open with a 4 p.m. match against SEMO on Friday and will follow with matches against IUPUI and Ohio State on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
