BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -The Xavier volleyball team battled it out in a five-set match with LSU and came up victorious (25-17, 22-25, 28-26, 23-25, 15-11) to move to 5-3 on the season. Sophomore Sarah Brown had an explosive day leading the match in kills and digs, the first double-double for a Musketeer this season.
LSU, a team that was receiving votes in the latest AVCA Top-25 Coaches Poll, has been spotless in recent seasons in the month of September. Prior to today's match, the Tigers had won 16-straght September matches, a streak that dates back to the 2009 season.
Brown led all players with 22 kills for a .312 attack percentage (22-7-48). Brown notched the first Musketeer double-double of the season, getting under a career-high 22 digs. The Mineral City, Ohio native also got a career-high four assists.
Freshman Aubree Smith smashed her previous career high in assists, helping out on 57 kills. Smith also had eight digs and five kills. Also getting a career high is sophomore Kelsey Dunaway, who got nine kills and eight digs. Red-shirt freshman Alex Blair put away a career-high 10 kills. Senior Michelle Matia was accurate from the net with a .524 hitting percentage (12-1-21). Red-shirt sophomore Alex Smith had a big day defensively, getting three solo blocks to go with her nine kills.
The third set proved to be the momentum changer. It was a back-and-forth battle throughout, with 20 ties and 10 lead changes. The Musketeers faced two Tiger set points before Alex Smith was able to knock in the kill to seal it.
